Membership Process
- The applicant must obtain a certified N.J. State
Fireman’s Association membership application from one of the four (4)
company Captains of the Somerville Fire Department that they wish to
join. Applications may also be
obtained at Somerville Borough Hall, 25 West End Avenue, Somerville.
- Engine Company #1 170 East Main Street
- Central Hook & Ladder Co. #1 24 Division Street
- West End Hose Co. #3 135 West High Street
- Lincoln Hose Co. #4 24 Warren Street
- The applicant must completely fill out the
application.
- All required personal information
- Receive a physical exam from Priority Medical
Care, 350 Grove St., Bridgewater, NJ

- Sign the application and have it notarized
- The completed application must be returned to
the particular company with an application fee.
- The applicant will then be contacted in regards
to an interview with the company’s investigating committee.
- The fire company may accept the applicant, for a
one (1) year probationary period, at their next regular company meeting.
- After the applicant is accepted by the company, the
ranking officer will present the application to the Board of Engineers at
the next regular board meeting.
- Once approved by the Board of Engineers and
signed by the Department Chief, the application will be sent to the
Borough Council for final approval.
- The probationary member will then be enrolled in
the next available Somerset County Firefighter 1 course. (Module A &
B) The applicant will also be
fitted for personal turnout gear.
- Upon successful completion of Module A, the
firefighter will be permitted to ride the apparatus and work outside the
“Hot Zone” at fire scenes.
- Upon successful completion of Module B and
certified firefighter 1 trained, the fire fighter can assume all duties
on the firegrounds, as seen fit by the officers of the Somerville Fire
Department
Note: After being accepted into the Somerville Fire
Department, the new member is requested to attend the next Board of Engineers
meeting, to be formally introduced to all Department Chiefs and Officers.
